Breastfeeding is a rewarding experience, although it can also be a tad tricky. New mums should take nay help they can get to ensure they find breastfeeding a wonderful experience and this includes investing in a breastfeeding pillow.
What is a nursing pillow?
Finding a position which is both comfortable for you to feed and easy for your baby to latch, can be a bit challenging. A nursing pillow is designed to take the stress out of getting this by supporting your baby’s head and nick and lifting them up to breast so they are ready to feed. They also take the strain off mum as you would be surprised that even the tiniest of babies can become heavy when they are feeding for extended periods.
Can I not just use a regular pillow?
There is no real reason why you could not use a regular pillow but a nursing pillow is designed specifically for this purpose, possibly making it more effective. These types of nursing pillow need not only be reserved for breastfeeding babies as they will also assist bottle feeding mums.
When do I need a breastfeeding pillow?
A breastfeeding pillow is ideal from the minute baby is born, put it on your list. Remember that in the first few months you could be breastfeeding up to 12 times a day, so we advise that you should take any help you can get. When the baby gets to about 6 months they will have better control over their head and so the pillow may no longer be needed. However the pillow can be used for tummy time or to prop your little one up so they get a good view of the word around them.
Whilst there are many different types of nursing pillows to close from, the boppy style pillow has been around for about 25 years and remains a firm favourite. It is versatile and can be used for feeding, lounging or cushioning baby.
